Registered Charity Number: 1056453
Registered as a charity in 1996, the PETA Foundation aims to end animal suffering by providing targeted audiences – such as teachers, children and government policy-makers – with the information they need to make informed and compassionate choices. The charity specialises in researching the link between cruelty to animals and violence towards humans.
Education
Much of PETA Foundation's work is in the field of education and aims to put unique and vital humane-education materials and resources in the hands of teachers. Our materials are often aimed at public officials as well.
To date, this work has included producing and distributing the following:
- Our award-winning "Share the World" humane-education pack, which was sent to every primary school in Britain free of charge
- A specialised version of "Share the World" for Australia and other countries.
- A free resource pack for GCSE English, which was sent to every secondary school in Britain
- Two free humane-education citizenship packs (one for primary teachers and one for secondary teachers)
- Our unique "Animals in Today's Society" pack for secondary teachers in Australia
- An information pack for the police, prosecutors and judges highlighting the link between cruelty to animals and violence towards human beings – this pack has been sent to 1,600 police stations as well as every courthouse, prosecutor's office and regional probation office in the UK (similar packs are now being prepared for India and other parts of Asia)
We also do the following:
- Manage three websites (ShareTheWorld.org.uk, AllAboutAnimals.org.uk and PETAF.org.uk) to help educators teach compassion
- Run free information and resource booths at education shows across the UK
- Research and write factsheets on a number of issues, including the link between cruelty to animals and violence towards humans
- Respond to individual requests for information from teachers and pupils
- Respond to reported cases of cruelty to animals, and send free humane-education packs to schools in those areas
- Send out hundreds of free humane-education packs to teachers around the world each week
- Send out teacher updates every term to more than 5,000 educators in the UK – the updates include humane teaching ideas and information about our free resources
The PETA Foundation aims to make compassion towards animals an integral part of both primary education and lifelong decision-making. The following quote from Yehudi Menuhin best describes that challenging mission:
"Why is compassion not part of our established curriculum, an inherent part of our education? Compassion, awe, wonder, … humility – these are the very foundations of any real civilisation, no longer the prerogatives, the preserves of any one church, but belonging to everyone, every child in every home, in every school."
Here is some suggested wording you might want to take with you to your solicitor if you are interested in leaving a gift to the PETA Foundation in your will.
